Research Interests
My specialization is in Chinese classical literature and bibliography. My research focuses on the study of popular literature through the analysis of Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasty colloquial Chinese texts (baihuawen) and on the expansion of commercial publishing which brought about a boom its readership. Specifically, I look at the publication history of Journey to the West (Xiyou ji; aka. “Monkey”) and the activities of its publishers (shufang). I also investigate the process through which the personal attributes of Zhang Fei are defined in Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi yanyi).
