U-PARL has now made selected materials publicly available as high resolution digital images on Flickr at

https://www.flickr.com/photos/asianresearchlibrary/collections.

The materials, including rare Chinese  books and calligraphic models, were selected from those in the collection of the General Library, University of Tokyo and those scheduled to be included in the collection of the Asian Research Library, University of Tokyo. In the future, U-PARL plans to further improve the digital collection of stone script rubbings, published calligraphic models, and rare Chinese classics published or transcribed in East Asia.

Flickr Usage Guide

Please access the content via the individual links above or through the site at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/asianresearchlibrary/collections. User registration, etc. is not necessary.

Each material is contained in one collection. These collections contain albums, into which picture files have been uploaded for one volume of the given material. Materials that are comprised of multiple volumes are separated into different albums.

When an album is opened, thumbnails of the contents are displayed. The viewing mode can be changed by clicking the  icon at top right.

Individual images can be viewed by clicking on the thumbnail. To go to the next page, click the arrow on the right side of the screen. Advertisements will occasionally be shown, but re-clicking the arrow will take you to the next page.

To download an image click the icon at bottom right and choose the preferred file size.

The entire album can be downloaded at once. However, only full size files can be chosen, and the download may take several hours. It may also fail partway through. In that case, please download each image individually.

Metadata

As part of making this data public, original metadata items were devised at U-PARL, making it possible to show the complicated attributes of the rare Chinese books and calligraphic models. In the description column of Flickr, cataloging information is listed for the material shown, based on the metadata item categories. This system has been designed with an eye to also using this information as machine-readable metadata in the future when open data technology advances. For details on the rare Chinese book and calligraphic model metadata categories, and on the conventions for cataloging such, please see the Excel file in the link below.
