Research Interests
Tatsuo ARAKI is having a great interest in Shuihuzhuan as well as folklore and popular literature of the Ming and Qing dynasties, so far, he has been conducting research on such topics as: various editions of Shuihuzhuan, the spread of Shuihuzhuan-related stories in Taiwan, and mentioning of pandas in Chinese literature.
Since assuming his current position, being focused on the materials in the possession of the University of Tokyo Library System, he has been analyzing various readings of Shuihuzhuan in Japan, digitizing the library collection, and researching its history.
He is also in charge of organizing materials formerly owned by the late TAKASHIMA Toshio, who served as an assistant at the University of Tokyo and assistant professor at Okayama University.
During the U-PARL’s second phase(2019 to 2023 school years), he was in charge of digitizing and releasing in digital form Asian Studies-related materials owned by the University of Tokyo, co-organizing academic conferences with Capital Normal University, holding exhibitions of the Asian Research Library’s digital collection, editing the catalog of said collection, and holding public seminars at Asian Library Café. He will continue initiatives with the aim of reaching the widest audience while incorporating any provided feedback.
