下記の要領により、シカゴ大学歴史学部・近東言語文明学部教授で、西アジア史・中央アジア史の世界的に著名な研究者であるジョン・ウッズ教授をお招きし、共催講演会「アジア研究再考」を開催します。ウッズ教授自身の研究キャリアを振り返りながら、アメリカにおける「アジア研究」の軌跡と今後とを展望する大変興味深い講演内容となっています。アジア研究の国際化がますます進む中、アメリカのアカデミアと日本のアカデミア、そして両者の協力関係の来し方・行く末を議論するまたとない機会となるかと思われます。アジア研究に関心を持つ全ての方々のご参加を歓迎いたします。
当講演会は東京大学・シカゴ大学戦略的パートナーシップ事業の一貫として、東京大学東洋文化研究所、東京大学附属図書館U-PARL（アジア研究図書館上廣倫理財団寄付研究部門）、東京大学日本・アジアに関する教育研究ネットワーク（ASNET）、Association for the Study of Persianate Societies Japan Officeの共催により開催するものです。また、ウッズ教授の日本訪問は、日本学術振興会外国人招へい研究者（短期）事業の助成により実現したものです（S17001）。

Rethinking Asian Studies
This lecture will address the development of the concept of Asian studies in the United States since the 1950s and how that conception has changed in recent years. Prof. Woods’ approach to this topic is largely autobiographical since he was educated and has taught within the area studies paradigm for almost 50 years at the University of Chicago. It seems that now is an appropriate time to reconfigure received models and revise them in a broader and more comprehensive perspective.
